Mentha pulegium
Its name is associated with Latin pulex (flea), alluding to its historical use as a flea repellent. Early settlers in colonial Virginia also used pennyroyal to eradicate pests.
Pennyroyal, who's leaves emit a very strong fragrance similar to spearmint when crushed, has soothing, expectorant properties, used in the treatment of flu and respiratory diseases. It also stimulates appetite and digestion, and has been shown to be an antiseptic used for external use.
Contraindications: Pennyroyal should be avoided during pregnancy and lactation, in children under 6 years of age; patients with gastrointestinal sensitivities or with neurological diseases, in high doses or for long periods.
In cooking, the beautifully aromatic dried leaves emit a strong minty flavor so use sparingly. Pennyroyal is a large part of the traditional Alentejo cuisine and is also widely used in Asian cuisine. It is used to season salads, fish dishes, caldeiradas, soups and açordas.
